what is philosophy

philosophy means 'love of wisdom'. we inherently have a desire for higher knowledge and understanding. we want to know the fundamentals of truth and the origin of the universe and everything in it. philosophy is engrained in our minds and in our everyday. you've probably heard, "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" and even that is philosophy.

WORLDVIEWS

your worldview is a basic set of beliefs that guide action. they are where you derive your virtue, thoughts on life and death, and sometimes, religion. these are a few of the most major worldviews. when sorting through your beliefs, i find it is helpful to read about different worldviews to help shape your belief system and confidently express your beliefs.

naturalism:the view that only nature and the natural world exists

romanticism:the view that the universe is a single unified and interconnected whole, and full of values, tendencies and life, not merely objective lifeless matter. see: immanuel kant

existentialism: a view that is centric to the individual and the free will and actions of the individual, you find your own meaning of life, this view holds no belief in a higher power and life is typically believed to be absurd given that it ends in suffering and inevitable death. see: john paul sartre

nihilism:the view that life has no meaning, value, or purpose whatsoever and rejects morality and religion. adjacent to existentialism, but more pessimistic. see: friedrich nietzsche

transcendentalism: a view that emphasizes self-sufficiency, intuition and spirituality over scientific thinking. see: ralph waldo emerson

idealism: the view that the mind is all that exists and the external world is an illusion created by the mind (antithetical to materialism)

materialism:the view that only material things exists and that 'supernatural' occurences are just material interactions and phenomena

rationalism:the view that knowledge is derived from not just observation, but through reasoning and intuition. see: rene descartes

theism:the belief that one or more gods exist and that certain characteristics can be ascribed to them (several types of theism such as classical and deism) see: most religions

dualism: the belief that all that exists is either material (physical and tanglible) or immaterial (spiritual/supernatural)

atheism: the lack of belief in a god or higher power (atheism varies widely from person to person. some firmly reject the notion that any god exists, some are apethetic to that notion, some say they have no knowledge as to whether a god exists but still choose nonbelief)

agnosticism: the belief that the existence of god cannot be known (again there are many types)

absurdism:(personally my worldview) the idea that life is meaningless and any attempt to find meaning is absurd and pointless.

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS

a short stay in hell by steven l peck. (a book about a man who dies and finds the afterlife to be not quite what he expected. it's a short book, but curious, depressing, and interesting until the very end)

the song of achilles by madeleine miller (much more than a sad romance novel. it's a cool take and another view of the events of the iliad.)
